Gastric plication is a modern, minimally invasive weight-loss procedure that reduces the stomach’s volume to roughly 3 ounces by folding the stomach inward and suturing it in place.

This method does not require any implanted devices, such as those used in gastric banding. Unlike gastric sleeve surgery, no part of the stomach is removed, which means the procedure may be reversible. It also differs from gastric bypass surgery because it does not include rerouting or reconnecting the intestines.

As a restrictive technique, gastric plication limits how much food the stomach can hold. Patients feel full much more quickly, which naturally helps reduce food intake and supports weight loss.

This type of bariatric surgery is usually considered for individuals with a BMI over 30 whose weight has remained stable for several years.

Candidates are often those who have tried intensive non-surgical weight loss methods without success.

The most crucial factor, however, is the patient’s readiness to adopt long-term lifestyle changes following the procedure.
